Machines

Year 2022
17-19, Jalan Tun H S Lee, City Centre, 50100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur.
Massive disposal of e-waste is polluting both environment and human health. E-waste refers to the disposal of electronic equipment that is nearing the end of its lifespan. The increasing desire for electronic devices has resulted in the fastest-growing trash stream in the world. In response, social enterprises such as Fairphone emerged with the intention to reduce electronics waste by promoting ethical smartphones. My project, titled Unusual Machines, then aims to advocate circularity in order to extend electronics' lifespan and minimize the usage of virgin materials.
It is a flagship store that aims to promote ethical electronics in Malaysia. The shop does not only sells
Fairphone-related products, but it allows customers to experience its value through space.
Retail,
Repair
& Recycle.
Retail
Provide retailtainment experience to customers with a combination of a flagship store, gallery and a small repair workshop. A urban mining workshop will be conducted regularly on the ground floor.
Repair
The repair workstation is located on the first floor providing services for broken electronics ranging from smartphones to microwaves. Customers can send the broken devices upstairs with a dumbwaiter.
Recycle
Customers will be rewarded with gift cards when they send us broken electronics. There are total of three stations.

The photo above show the journey of customers' perspectives.

Retail
Customers are greeted by staff and then introduced to the story of Fairphone. they are free to walk around and interact with the latest devices and accessories on the wall. A vending machine is located at the centre surrounded by tables and chairs. Customers who purchase spare parts then will be guided to repair their Fairphone. Customers can have a quick test on products and scroll through the tablet on the countertop on the left while second-hand spare part is selling on the right.

Repair
Seeing your broken electronics being sent upstairs with a transparent dumbwaiter is giving a sense of ritual. Staff receive the gadgets from the conveyor belt and start diagnosing problems. Then, pass to the technician for repair with the components from the library at the back. The coworking space is by the side, and customers can either read or work with coffee while waiting. The pantry is a common area that helps to spark conversations between workers and customers.

Relationship
Electronics in good condition will be maintained after data wiping for donation, while others will be sent to the second station for dismantling. Staff will teardown usable components and batteries for safety. The last station is a collection point for faulty gadgets, batteries, and devices for donation. The trash will then be transported to a recycling facility in partnership with ERTH. An emergency entrance is prepared for emergency fire escape. The glass is made of polycarbonate and allows customers to see how much rubbish has been collected.
